Plastic Rod Welding
Lets take the case of a dent on a bumper – dent is nothing but a deformation on the thermoplastic. Thermo plastic as the name suggests is plastic that responds to the application of heat. A simple heat gun merely softens the substrate which is then hammered lightly back into the originalposition. Dents are probably the most common issues that one finds on plastic bumpers during city drive. The procedure does not need special tools except a heat gun and a vice to clasp the bumper so that it is immobilised during the heating and hammering process. Once the bumper is aligned properly, the mechanic merely dabs a wet cloth on the affected area so that the temperature of the thermoplastic bumper touches ambient as fast as possible and precludes further deformation during handling. This is very important as the bumper substrate is soft and pliable as a result of the application. The thermoplastic bumpers are made of a variety of thermoplastic materials but the most popular amongst them is PP or polypropylene.

In other situations of accidents or collisions the bumper may face some harsher damage where the workshop will have to use skilled people to undertake the repair and refurbishment of the damaged bumper. These are cracks which the fender may have as a result of which the complete Repair Kit for Automotive Bumpers may have to be used. There are many accessories which form part of this repair kit of which the most important ingredient is again the Hot Air Gun. This Heat Gun should ideally have a precise temperature control sothat the application of excess heat does not damage the bumper or deform itwhen in operation. Some of the other accessories include a universal welding rod and a steel mesh. The principle of repair is pretty straight forward. The affected area is sanded using a grinder so that the exterior surface is removed exposing the raw plastic beneath. The steel mesh and the universal rod are then heated using the hot air blower on the cracked surface. This bonds and fuses the damaged area which is then sanded and levelled before the bumper is taken for a paint job.
Sometimes one may face situations of the lugs breaking off due to the impact. However, this too can be repaired used the same principle mentioned above. For more information on how to repair damaged bumpers refer to the following video.
